Thirty eyes were donated to the Narayan Nethralaya eye bank within 20 days of Kannada thespian Rajkumar’s death. Besides several people came forward to pledge their eyes to the eye bank.
“Normally it takes us over six months to receive such a donation but many people, inspired by Rajkumar donated their eyes. A week before his death, Rajkumar had reminded his wife to donate his eyes after his death,” said Medical Director of Narayan Nethralaya, Bangalore Bhujang Shetty at Antarakshi -a charity show in Bangalore on Saturday. “There are around two million people with corneal blindness in India. Eye donation can help them get their sight back,” he added.
The dance show, organised by the Karnataka Welfare Association for the Blind (KWAB), in collaboration with Hoysala Dance Academy, was a brilliant portrayal of integration; of sighted and the visually impaired children. The highlight was the lighting of the lamp by three visually challenged children. On the occasion President of KWAB B V Mallikarjunaiah announced their future project – Sushikshana Saadana Education Centre, a residential school for the visually impaired children.
