Rajkumar memorial will be made culture centre

Two years and seven months after Rajkumar’s death, the much-delayed foundation stone for his memorial was laid by chief minister B S Yeddyurappa at Kanteerava Studio on Wednesday.

Speaking on the occasion, Yeddyurappa promised the government’s complete support in establishing the memorial. He said, “Today if Dr Rajkumar were alive, he would have rejoiced the classical status conferred on Kannada. He was always in the forefront for the cause of Kannada and Kannadigas. Had he been interested in politics, he would have definitely become the chief minister. But he was not interested in power nor in the chair, dedicating himself to the Kannada film industry.”

This information was revealed in a letter written by the State Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Raja to M. ‘O Thaayi Laali Thaayi….Bhoomi Thaayi’ was song sung by Dr. Rajkumar for Hoovu Hannu made in 1993. The film, an adaptation of the novel Triveni, had Lakshmi, Ajay Gundu Rao, Vyjayanthi and Baby Shyamili in the lead and was directed by S.V. Rajendra Singh Babu. The song was featured on Ajay Gundu Rao, son of former Chief Minister R. Gundu Rao. The song was for a scene where the hero loses his father.

The Union Government has, at last, come forward to release postal stamp on Kannada matinee idol Dr. Rajkumar and there is a possibility that the stamp would be released this year itself. The stamps on Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and St. Joseph’s Boys High School, Bangalore, would also be released along with Dr. Rajkumar stamp this year.

The Postal Stamps Advisory Committee has given approval for the release of stamps on Dr. Rajkumar and the two Institutions of Bangalore. This decision was taken at a meeting held recently in Delhi, said one of the Committee members while speaking to reporters on Monday.

Curzon Park-3 to be named after Dr.Raj

The City Corporation has decided to name Curzon Park-3 after the Kannada matinee idol late Dr. Rajkumar. A House Committee will be constituted to decide on a suitable location to install the bust of the actor, informed Mayor Ayub Khan during the Council meet at the City Corporation here yesterday.

Presiding over the meeting, Ayub Khan disclosed that the expenses for naming the Curzon Park-3 after Dr. Rajkumar and installation of his bust at Highway Circle, as suggested by a member, would be met by the City Corporation.

Protest holds up traffic on Mysore Road

Traffic on Mysore Road was thrown out of gear due to a protest on Monday morning. The Shivarajkumar Fans’ Association organized the protest following damage to Kannada thespian Dr Rajkumar’s bust at Nayandahalli on Sunday. Some shopkeepers at Pantarapalya downed their shutters to express solidarity with the protesters.

Actor and Dr Rajkumar’s son Shivarajkumar urged the fans to protest peacefully. He requested them to lodge a police complaint instead of blocking roads.

In the months immediately preceding and following Dr Rajkumar’s death, If You Come Today a song from his film, Operation Diamond Racket (1978), became an incredibly popular internet meme. In India, it rivalled global favourites like the Star Wars kid and Badger Badger . Opinion on the song was divided between a burgeoning bunch of Indian hipsters who found it kitschy and Rajkumar’s hardcore fanbase from his home state Karnataka who found it genuinely cool. The debate rages on wherever the video is hosted.

The movie was the third chronicling the adventures of Prakash aka CID 999, a James Bondesque superspy. The director duo of Dorai-Bhagwan began making spy flicks relatively late in their careers, having started with mythological films in the 1950s.Eager to experiment with different styles, they’d already made CID 999 in Goa and CID 999 in Jackpot before scoring their biggest hit in the genre with Operation Diamond Racket.

Book about Rajkumar in English

An Inimitable Actor with a Golden Voice, a book about Rajkumar, the icon of Kannada cinema, was released on Thursday at the press club of Bangalore by Smt Parvathamma Rajkumar, leading producer and wife of Rajkumar. The book is a translation of Bangaradha Manushya, a Kannada book on the actor by A.N. Prahallada Rao.

Smt Parvathamma said that she is very happy with the English version of the book. “I feel happy about the analysis made by writer A.N. Prahallada Rao in Bangaradha Manushya,” She said. Professor Nissar, the famous poet who was present on the occasion, recalled that the two persons who moved him very much are Dr. Rajkumar and Dr. K.V. Puttappa (Kuyempu National poet).

The English version is by Prof. C.N. Ramachandran and he intends to write another book on the life of Dr. Rajkumar. An Inimitable Actor with a Golden Voice will be released again in New Jersey on May 10.

Legendary Rajkumar goes global

Dr Rajkumar, The Inimitable Actor With a Golden Voice, the English version of a book covering the life, films and achievements of the legendary Kannada hero will be released on May 10 in New Jersey. uthored by A N Prahalada Rao, who contributes daily to leading Kannada dailies, the book will be released by the Karnataka Cultural Organisation-Brindavana, a registered and cultural organisation based in New Jersey which has close to 1000 Kannadigas as its members.

Originally written in Kannada titled as Bangarada Manushya (A man of Gold) and published in 2005 to mark the Sarthaka Suvarna, 50 years of the thespian’s film career, the book has had three editions and sold over 15,000 copies, said Rao during the release of the English version in India. The English version of the book has been translated by Jayshree Alladi, a scribe, and Prof C N Ramchandaran.

“The aim of the book was to reach out to a global audience. Rajkumar was a cult figure and cannot be restricted to just the local geography, he has a large fan following even abroad among Kannadigas”, Rao said. The 204-page book, comprising 18 chapters, takes a close look at Rajkumar’s films, providing factual details about each of his films.

It also provides information on his films based on mythology, those based on novels, the social dramas and even his role as the Indian version of James Bond. The book explores his role as the ’singing star’ one, who lent his golden voice to the characters he enacted be it the village simpleton, a great mythological character or even as the do-gooder or the protagonist of many a social drama.
